52 class
locomotives production started in 1942 for military
reasons and was going on till 1951 at the factories on
the territories of Germany, France, Poland and Check.
The first German experimental model of Kriegslokomotive
was produced on September 12, 1942. Totally there were
built 6719 locomotives. After the Second World War up to
2700 this type locomotives operated on the territory of
the USSR. In 1952 it was titled as class ТЭ, but old
numeration was saved. The Soviet Union used the
locomotives on all the territory, but mainly they were
used on the western boundaries: on Baltic, Byelorussian,
Ukraine railways. In 1960th its operation on mainline
railways ends. Further the locomotives were used in
shunting; on industrial railways and as stationary steam
boilers. 52 class locomotives were in operation in
Latvia from 1943 till 1985.
ТЭП60-1206. The locomotive
intended for passengers transportation, has been built
in 1984 in Russia at Kolomna machine-building factory.
In the same year the locomotive has came in order of
Zasulauks locomotive depot of the Baltic railway. Then
it was handed to Riga locomotive depot. There it had
been in operation till 1995. |

ТЭП60 (60th
years passenger diesel locomotive with electrical
transmission), class locomotives, total number 1241, had
been built from 1960 till 1985. They were equipped with
made on the Kolomna factory 11Д45 2-stroke V-16 diesel
engine. Its main generator can supply six traction
motors which with the gear unit help are connected each
to its wheel pair.
Locomotives of this class on the main lines of the
Soviet Union railways have replaced steam locomotives
and became the most widely used locomotive of passengers
transportations in 1960th - 80th years. Latvia used this
type of locomotives from 1963 till 1995.
TЭ3-7593. Both sections of the locomotive –
„A” and „B” were made in Ukraine in 1972 on
Voroshilovgrad (Lugansk) diesel locomotives
machine-building factory. The locomotive in the same
year has entered in order of Daugavpils locomotive depot
of the Baltic railway. It was withdrawn from inventory
of Latvian Railway in 1994. |

ТЭ3 (the
third type of diesel locomotive with electrical
transmission) class locomotives, total number 13 595,
produced since year 1953 up to 1973 on three factories
of the USSR - in Harkov, Kolomna and Lugansk. Each
section is equipped with the 2-stroke, 10-cylinder 2Д100
class diesel engine made at the Harkov factory named by
Malishev. It’s main generator supplied by electrical
power six traction motors. It is possible to use each
locomotive section in an independent mode though in that
case it is necessary to turn it around on the end
station as the section is equipped with only one driver
cab. On the main lines of the Soviet railways
locomotives of this class have replaced steam
locomotives and became most widely used locomotives for
freight service in 1960-ties – 1980-ties. In Latvia
locomotives of this class were used from 1967 till 1991
in Daugavpils and Riga locomotive depots.
ВЛ26-005. The
overhead/battery-powered locomotive was built in Ukraine
in 1967 at Dňepropetrovsk electro locomotive building
works. It was used on shunting and for hauling of local
freight trains in Riga zone, as well as on electrified
and non electrified tracks. ВЛ26-005 was withdrawn from
Latvian Railways stock in 1995. It has been refurbished
at Zasulauks depot and handed to the museum in 1998. |

ВЛ26 – the
series named by Vladimir Lenin, the project of 26th type
locomotives was held by Public design office of
scientifically technical association of the Baltic
Railway in Riga. In 1966 – 67th in Dňepropetrovsk were
built 10 units of this class locomotives. Six of them
operated in Latvia. These locomotives have no analogue
in the USSR locomotives building history. Its appearance
is the result of large scale experiments in the field of
accumulator traction, which were held only on Baltic
Railways.
The
Shunting Diesel Locomotive ТЭМ2-1000. It was
constructed in 1971 in Russia at Bryansk diesel
locomotives machine-building factory. It was used for
shunting works in Daugavpils locomotive depot, serving
railway junctions. It was written off from the Latvian
Railway in 1995.

ТЭМ2 (the
shunting diesel locomotive of the second type with
electric control) the serial locomotive of various
updating, total more than 9000 units, have been built
from 1960 till 2000. In the process of manufacture the
basic model was modernized several times, with giving to
the locomotive of corresponding indexes. The locomotive
ЭМ2-1000 is equipped with ПД1М four-cycle six cylinder
diesel engine with charging turbine set, made on Penza
diesel building factory. Its main working generator can
supply with the electric power six traction electric
motors which with the gear unit help are connected each
to its pair wheels.
In Latvia locomotives of ТЭМ2 series were used till
1968. Originally they have replaced steam locomotives in
Daugavpils and Rezekne on railway junctions, were used
on other junctions and access roads of the enterprises
later.
Now some machines of ТЭМ2
series are used for repair of a rail way and for service
of repair technical equipment.
ТГМ3Б-2804.
The machine was built in 1970 at Ljudinov diesel
locomotives building factory. It served on Jelgava,
Ventspls and Liepaja depot sites. The locomotive was
withdrawn from inventory of Latvian Railway on 1994. |

type 4–stroke V-12 cylinder diesel engines. As a rule
these locomotives were equipped with produced at Murom
factory ГП-400 type hydraulic transmissions, though some
of machines were equipped with much more reliable
transmission devices produced at Austrian company
“Voith”.
ТГМ1 class locomotives were built for industrial
enterprises took the place of more complicate and less
reliable steam locomotives. These class locomotives were
widely used in Latvia during 1960-ties – 1980-ties. The
locomotive ТГМ1-532 is the last one.

ТГК2 (the
second type of Kaluga factory’s diesel locomotive with
hydro mechanical transmission) is serial locomotive, the
production starts in 1959 and they were still produced!
There were built more than 9000 of these class
locomotives. 4-stroke, 6-cylinder У1Д6-250ТК type
supercharged diesel engines for this locomotive class
made at Sverdlovsk factory. Force moment to wheel pairs
was transmitted by hydro-mechanical transmission unit,
which consists of step-up reducer unit, hydro
transformer and gearbox. All that provided the movement
in two modes: more power and slower speed in shunting
mode and vice versa in train traction mode.
ТГК2 class locomotives are meant for operating on small
enterprises branch-lines, as well as railway’s
maintenance machines support. It is possible to find
these class locomotives on several enterprises in Latvia
now.

(15 ton two axel motor shunter of Kaluga factory)
shunter is the serial one, and has been built from 1947
till 1959. In total there were built more than four
thousand such units. Mainly they intended for service of
branch-lines of the small and average enterprises though
some of them were used on the state railway, in
shunting.
The motor shunter design is taken from a lorry. Serial
six cylinder petrol engine ЗИС-120 and five-gear box are
mounted on it. To assure the movement in both directions
there is mounted reverser, which protruding shaft with
drive shaft help is connected to both shunter wheel
pairs. |
